Song 82: Atmosphere, “Say Shh” (2003)Posted: March 23, 2013
I wrote about this topic before, so I’ll keep this brief: Minneapolis took me by surprise. Not only is it a more fun town than you’d expect, there are more good bands than per square mile than whatever city you’re sitting in right now. When Lizzie and I moved there for a five-year adventure, friendless and in a strange land, songs like “Say Shh” were on heavy rotation.
When The Current went on the air on January 24, 2005 (about five months after we arrived), most people assumed the Replacements’ “Left of the Dial” would be its first song, but it was “Say Shh,” a musical Chamber of Commerce brochure, instead. It starts with Slug’s admission that he initially had trouble making his list (“Prince lives here, we got 10,000 lakes!”), but it picks up speed and crescendos with some shout-outs to some of Minnesota’s towns and cities (“Duluth, Minnesnowta!”). I wouldn’t go so far as to say that this song convinced us that Minneapolis was a fun town (for that, I credit our eventual good friends, as well as Summit Beer, Brave New Workshop, and The Hold Steady), but it was a good start.
